Pinedale is the smallest county seat in the state of Wyoming with an estimated current population of 1,658. In addition to being the local seat of government, Pinedale is headquarters for ranchers, outfitters and recreation in the northern end of the county. It's a typical western cattle town, complete with log buildings and false-front frame structures in the downtown area. Many of the homes in and around Pinedale are also constructed with native pine logs. Pinedale is located in western Wyoming approximately 78 miles south of Jackson Hole and 100 miles north of Rock Springs along Highway 191.

The town is nestled on the western flank of the Wind River Mountain Range. Twelve-mile-long Fremont Lake, just three miles from town, provides the town’s water and recreation opportunities including sailing regattas to ice fishing derbies with towering peaks in the background. The Museum of the Mountain Man on the hill above town offers a fascinating look into the lives of Sublette County’s early explorers. Average summer temperatues range in the 70s and 80s with winter hovering around 15 degrees.

Storming the Fort
The first fort in Wyoming was started as a fur trade post in 1834, known as Fort John. Located near the Laramie River, it had become Fort Laramie by 1849 when the military took control. The fort's grounds just west of the town of Fort Laramie in southeast Wyoming have an open parade ground surrounded by military-era buildings. One structure, Old Bedlam, is the oldest standing building in the State of Wyoming. At or near Fort Laramie, fur traders, overland emigrants, the frontier army and Indians gathered as they came to trade, work and meet.

You can play in one of nature's largest sandboxes in the country just a few miles north of Rock Springs at the Killpecker Sand Dunes. The dunes seem out of place in southwest Wyoming. It's the kind of environment you'd expect to find in the deserts of Africa or the Mid-East. There's an off-road vehicle "play area" for desert toys and lots of space to walk around in the sand.
