In 1905 the land around it was used for homesteading. The landrights had to be settled by troops. Few of the original structures remain because of the 1907 fires. Shoshoni, a small community located on the edge of the Owl Creek Mountains, was named for the great Indian people- the Shoshone. Today it is a headquarters community for Boysen State Park.
